‘Petra Börner portrays in-between beings. They are both human, animal and plants. Branches turn into arms, and flower buds have faces. Humans become plants, and plants become animals with eyes staring intently from their own densely packed micro-universes. Petra Börner's brushes of paint and lines of ink are themselves cuttings or roots that seem to grow not only forward but also in thickness. The colours spread out like any plant that spreads, until it runs out of space, gets cut down or uprooted.
Petra Börner continues this work of reimagining and refashioning the Greek myths. She creates new, strange beings in her own colours and with a new sense of presence. These metamorphoses are not, I believe, about longing for an ideal past, or about the artist as a mythological figure. Rather, they point to the present where the interdependence of humans and nature has been brought to our attention once again. In Petra Börner's works we see hybrids of plants and people. There are no sharp boundaries, but instead entangled, weird, slightly frightening and beautiful organisms in worlds of their own.’ Theis Vallø Madsen, Curator, PhD
